Senko hanabi is a small handheld firework. When lit, it forms a glowing ember that gives off delicate sparks. It lasts only a few seconds, but those moments are filled with quiet beauty.

どうやって作られているの？ / How Is It Made?

線香花火の作り方はとても繊細です。まず、細い和紙をねじって棒状にし、その先に火薬を混ぜた火玉をつけます。火薬には硝酸カリウム、硫黄、木炭などが使われ、熟練の職人が絶妙なバランスで調合します。湿度や温度に注意しながら、一本一本手作業で仕上げるため、大量生産が難しく、伝統工芸としても評価されています。

Making senko hanabi is a delicate process. First, a thin piece of washi paper is twisted into a stick shape. Then, a tiny ball of gunpowder mixture—usually potassium nitrate, sulfur, and charcoal—is attached to one end. Skilled artisans carefully mix the ingredients and assemble each sparkler by hand, paying close attention to humidity and temperature. Because of this craftsmanship, many senko hanabi are considered a form of traditional art.

線香花火には大きく分けて2種類あります。

• 関西風（立て線香）：水平に持って火をつけます。より大きな火花が出るのが特徴です。

There are two main types:

• Kanto style: Held downward like a drooping flower. You watch quietly until the ember drops.
• Kansai style: Held horizontally. It produces slightly bigger sparks and a more dynamic display.
