お正月の少し静かな朝、筆と墨を用意して文字を書く――それが「書き初め（かきぞめ）」です。日本では、新しい一年の始まりに、心を整えながら言葉を書く伝統行事として親しまれています。
Kakizome is a traditional New Year custom in Japan where people write characters with brush and ink at the start of the year. It’s a calm, reflective way to begin a new chapter.

1. 書き初めってなに？ / What Is Kakizome?

書き初めとは、新年になって初めて行う書道のことです。一年の目標や願い、前向きな言葉などを、筆と墨で書きます。よく書かれる言葉は「お正月」「新春」「初日の出」「夢」「希望」などです。
Kakizome is the practice of calligraphy done for the first time in the New Year. People write their goals, wishes, or positive words for the year ahead using a brush and ink. Commonly written phrases include “New Year,” “Early Spring,” “First Sunrise,” “Dream,” and “Hope.”

学校の冬休みの宿題として書初めが出されることも多く、お正月の風景のひとつとして、記憶に残っている人も少なくないでしょう。
For many people in Japan, kakizome is also a familiar school assignment during the winter holidays, and it remains a memorable part of the traditional New Year scene.

2. 書き初めっていつやるの？ / When Is Kakizome Done?

伝統的には、1月2日に行うとされています。これは、年神様を迎えたあと、心を落ち着けて一年の始まりを意識する日と考えられてきたからです。ただし、現代では三が日や1月中に行うことも多く、そこまで厳密ではありません。

Traditionally, kakizome is done on January 2nd, after welcoming the New Year deity and settling into the start of the year. Today, many people do kakizome anytime in early January.

3. なぜ書き初めをするの？ / Why Do Kakizome?

書き初めは、単なる書道練習ではありません。新しい一年をどう過ごしたいかを、自分自身に問いかける時間でもあります。言葉を選び、ゆっくり書くことで、自然と気持ちが整っていく。そんな「心の準備」のような役割を持っています。

Kakizome isn’t just calligraphy practice — it’s a moment of self-reflection at the start of the year. Writing slowly helps people focus and mentally prepare for the year ahead.

上手に書くことよりも、「どんな気持ちでその言葉を書くか」が大切だとされています。

It’s not about perfect calligraphy, but about intention.

4. 書いたあとはどうする？ / What Happens After?

書き初めの紙は、家に飾ったり、学校に提出したりします。地域によっては、「どんど焼き」でお焚き上げすることもあります。文字を煙とともに空へ送ることで、願いが天に届くと考えられています。

Afterward, the writing may be displayed at home or school, or burned in a ritual fire during events like Dondoyaki. The smoke is believed to carry the wishes upward.

5. 現代の書き初め / Kakizome Today

最近では、筆ペンで気軽に書いたり、デザイン書道として楽しむ人も増えています。
SNSに写真を投稿する人もいて、形は少しずつ変わっています。それでも、「一年の始まりに言葉を書く」という本質は変わっていません。

Today, people sometimes use brush pens or treat kakizome as a creative activity, even sharing it online. Still, the core idea — starting the year with intention — remains the same.

書き初めは、日本人にとって「新しい年をどう生きるか」を静かに考える、ささやかな儀式です。
