駄菓子ってなに？ / What Are Dagashi?

駄菓子とは、安価で子ども向けに作られたお菓子やスナックのこと。駄菓子という言葉は、「駄」が「つまらないもの、価値の低いもの」を意味することから、子どもたちのお小遣いで買えるような、手の届きやすいお菓子として名付けられました。

しかし、その素朴さとは裏腹に、多くの人にとって幼い頃の思い出や喜びと深く結びついており、単なるお菓子以上の存在です。多くは10円や20円といった低価格で、昔ながらの駄菓子屋さんで売られていました。

Dagashi are inexpensive candies and snacks traditionally sold to children. The term “dagashi” literally means “worthless sweets,” with “da” referring to something cheap or low-quality. The name reflects their original purpose: simple, affordable treats that children could easily buy with their pocket money.

But despite this humble name, dagashi are far more than just cheap snacks; they are deeply tied to childhood memories and joy for many people. Priced as low as 10 or 20 yen, these inexpensive candies and snacks were traditionally sold at old-fashioned “dagashi-ya” (dagashi shops), which were once a cornerstone of Japanese neighborhoods.

幼いころには、学校から帰った後、おこずかいでもらった50円を握りしめて、駄菓子屋に行きました。50円でも、2-3個の駄菓子が買えて、幸せな気持ちになりました。

駄菓子にはいろいろな種類があります。以下は代表的な例です。
