「ひな祭り」を英語で紹介 / Introducing Hinamatsuri in English

ひな祭りは、3月3日に行われる日本の伝統的な行事です。女の子の健やかな成長と幸せを願う日として知られ、「人形祭り」と呼ばれることもあります。海外の人に日本の季節行事を紹介する際、ひな祭りは日本文化の特徴を伝えやすいテーマのひとつです。

Hinamatsuri is a traditional Japanese event celebrated on March 3rd. It is known as a day to wish for the healthy growth and happiness of girls and is sometimes called the Doll Festival. It is also a good topic for introducing Japanese seasonal culture to people from overseas.

ひな祭りとは？ / What is Hinamatsuri?

ひな祭りは、毎年3月3日に行われる年中行事です。家庭ではひな人形を飾り、女の子の無事な成長を願います。日本では古くから季節の節目を大切にしてきましたが、ひな祭りもその代表的な行事のひとつです。

Hinamatsuri is a seasonal event held every year on March 3rd. Families display decorative dolls, called hina dolls, and pray for the well-being of their daughters. In Japan, seasonal turning points have long been important, and Hinamatsuri is one such occasion.

なぜひな祭りを祝うの？ / Why Is Hinamatsuri Celebrated?

ひな祭りの起源は、古代の厄払いの行事にあるとされています。人形に災いを移し、身を清めるという考え方があり、これが現在のひな祭りへと発展しました。

The origin of Hinamatsuri can be traced back to ancient purification customs. People believed that dolls could take on misfortune, such as illness or bad luck, and this belief eventually developed into today’s festival.

ひな人形にはどんな意味がある？ / What Do Hina Dolls Represent?

ひな人形を飾ることには、女の子の健康と幸せを願う意味があります。ひな祭りでは、段飾りにひな人形を飾ります。これらの人形は、天皇や皇后をはじめとする宮廷の人々を表しており、平安時代の装束を身に着けているのが特徴です。

By displaying these dolls, families express their wishes for girls’ health and happiness.　During Hinamatsuri, families display hina dolls on tiered stands. The dolls represent figures from the imperial court, such as the Emperor and Empress, and are dressed in Heian-period clothing (traditional court attire).

また、日本では「ひな人形をいつまでも出していると、お嫁に行くのが遅れる」と言われることがあります。この言い伝えは、物事のけじめや季節感を大切にする考え方を表しているとも言われています。

There is also a common saying in Japan that if hina dolls are not put away soon after Hinamatsuri, the girl may get married late. This saying is often explained as reflecting the importance of good habits and a sense of seasonal order, rather than being taken literally.

ひな祭りに食べるもの / What Do People Eat on Hinamatsuri?

ひな祭りには、いくつかの定番の食べ物があります。代表的なのはちらし寿司で、酢飯の上に魚介や野菜を彩りよく盛り付けた料理です。

Several traditional foods are associated with Hinamatsuri. One of the most common dishes is chirashi sushi, a type of sushi with seafood and vegetables scattered over rice (chirashi means “scattered”).

また、ひなあられや菱餅などの甘いお菓子もよく食べられます。ひなあられは、色とりどりの小さな米菓子で、ひな祭りを代表するお菓子のひとつです。地域によって、甘いものや塩味のものがあります。

Sweet snacks such as hina-arare and hishi-mochi are also commonly enjoyed. Hina-arare are small, colorful rice crackers and are one of the most symbolic sweets for Hinamatsuri. Depending on the region, they can be sweet or savory.

ひなまつりは祝日ではなく行事 / Hinamatsuri is not a National Holiday but a Cultural Event

ひな祭りは日本の祝日ではありませんが、多くの家庭で親しまれている行事です。また、男の子のための行事としては、5月5日のこどもの日があります。

Hinamatsuri is not a national holiday in Japan, but it is widely celebrated at home. For boys, a similar event is Children’s Day, which is held on May 5th.

日本の季節行事には、ひな祭りのほかにも、節分やこどもの日など、意味や由来を英語で説明しやすい行事がたくさんあります。ひな祭りとあわせて紹介すると、日本文化の理解がより深まります。

Japan has many other seasonal events besides Hinamatsuri, such as Setsubun and Children’s Day. Introducing these events together can help people gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
