1. だるまとは？ / What Is a Daruma?

だるまは、禅宗の開祖・達磨大師をかたどった縁起物です。起き上がりこぼしのように倒しても起き上がる形から、「七転び八起き」の象徴とされ、忍耐や努力、成功を意味します。

A daruma is a traditional Japanese doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. Designed to always return to an upright position, it symbolizes perseverance and success—”fall down seven times, get up eight.”

2. 願いを込める方法 / How to Make a Wish with a Daruma

だるまは、両目が空白の状態で販売されます。まず願いごとを思い浮かべながら片方の目を描きます。そして、願いが叶ったらもう片方の目を描き入れます。

A daruma comes with both eyes blank. You fill in one eye while making a wish or setting a goal. When your wish is fulfilled, you draw in the other eye as a sign of gratitude and accomplishment.

目を描かないのは、願いを「見守ってもらう」ためです。目が入っていないことで、「まだ途中」「まだ達成していない」という意味を持たせています。

The blank eyes represent a goal or wish that is yet to be achieved. It’s a way to stay focused and be reminded of your commitment every time you see the daruma.

3. 色やデザインの違い / Colors and Variations

伝統的には赤色ですが、最近では色ごとに意味を持つカラフルなだるまもあります：
Traditionally red, modern daruma come in various colors with different meanings:

• 赤（Red）：家内安全、健康 – Health and family safety
• 金/黄（Gold/Yellow）：金運、成功 – Wealth and success
• 白（White）：合格祈願、清らかさ – Purity or academic success
• 黒（Black）：魔除け、ビジネス運 – Protection and business fortune

• 高崎だるま市（群馬）：日本最大級のだるま市。1月に開催。
  Takasaki Daruma Market (Gunma): One of the largest daruma festivals, held in January.

  Jindaiji Daruma Fair (Tokyo): A historic event from the Edo period, held in early March.
