食品サンプルって何？ / What Are Food Samples?

食品サンプルは、レストランのショーウィンドウなどで見られる「本物そっくりの料理の模型」です。プラスチックや樹脂で作られており、色や質感も本物そっくり。見た目だけでは本物と見分けがつかないこともあります。

Food samples (called shokuhin sampuru in Japanese) — also known as food replicas or fake food — are hyper-realistic plastic models of dishes displayed in restaurant windows. Made from plastic or resin, they look so real that many people mistake them for actual food!

食品サンプルの役割と起源 / The Role and Origin of Food Replicas

食品サンプルの起源には諸説ありますが、大正から昭和の時代に誕生したと言われています。最初はレストランや病院などで使われ、やがて全国に広まりました。

食品サンプルは、料理の内容や量をひと目で伝えるために使われています。幼い子どもや、日本語が分からない海外からの観光客にとっても、とても便利で親切な仕組みです。

There are several theories about the origin of food replicas, but they are believed to have started in the Taisho to early Showa period (early 20th century). Initially used in restaurants and hospitals, they eventually spread throughout Japan.

Food replicas are used to visually show what a dish looks like and how much food it contains. They are especially helpful and thoughtful for children and tourists from abroad who cannot read Japanese menus.

どうやって作るの？ / How Are They Made?

昔はロウで作られていましたが、現在ではプラスチックやシリコンが主流。一つひとつ職人の手作業で作られ、焼き目やツヤなど、リアルな細部まで丁寧に表現されます。

Originally made from wax, modern food replicas are crafted from plastic or silicone. Skilled artisans handcraft every detail — from the grill marks on meat to the shine of sauces.
